THE FIFTEEN PROMISES OUR LADY MADE TO ST. DOMINIC TO THOSE WHO FAITHFULLY PRAY THE ROSARY
ORIGINS & HISTORY OF THE ROSARY
A little history about the origins of the rosary might be helpful. The use of beads to count prayers dates back to the ninth century when Irish monks used them to chant the 150 Psalms. People imitated the monks and the devotion spread.
“But it was only in the year 1214, however, that Holy Mother Church received the Rosary in its present form and according to the method we use it today. It was given to the Church by Saint Dominic who had received it from the Blessed Virgin in an apparition as a powerful means of converting the Albigensians and other sinners.”[1]
I’m sure more than a few people will pause here and say— wait a minute— did she just say that the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Dominic? Before you decide that’s too hard to believe, think of how crazy Christians sound to atheists when they profess to believe that God sent His only Son, Jesus, (who is also God as one of the three parts of the Trinity) to earth to be born of a virgin, to preach, to die for our sins, to rise from the dead, and then to ascend into heaven.[2]
Don't get thrown by the fact that it was "Our Lady" who appeared either please. "Our Lady" is Jesus's mother of course. In fact, she's "your lady" if you believe in Jesus, for she only wants to lead everyone to her Son. With that said, bear with me for a minute. So, when Our Lady appeared to Saint Dominic, she made 15 promises to those who faithfully pray the rosary. (See first column)[3]
